What is broaching?
broaching (broch’ing) the process of efficiently removing material, shaping and/or finishing metal parts consistently and precisely in quantity.
Generally when we think of metalworking, or metal cutting we think of traditional machinery such as mills, drills, lathes, or grinders. Broaching is a more specialized, efficient way to remove material, shape, or finish specific metal parts. It is particularly effective, efficient and profitable when the demand is for high-volume, close tolerance, precision work. It is also an excellent method. Sometimes the only method. For working a part that has an unusual or intricate configuration or shape.
The heart of any broaching operation is the tool itself and the design of the tool is all-important. Broaching tools are… almost without exception, individually tailored to the job. They cannot be picked off a parts shelf, they have to be designed and manufactured for specific functions. The tool consists of a series of teeth or cutting edges in fixed relation to each other that are either pushed or pulled over the work piece. The teeth of the broaching tool are successively stepped so that each tooth takes a little deeper bite than the tooth that precedes it. The tooth section generally includes roughing, semi finishing and finishing teeth, thereby enabling single pass machining. |
